We opened the Map Room in November 1992 with a travelers’ theme. We began fleshing out our theme with maps, National Geographic magazines, travel books, and beers from all over the world.
Thank goodness we met brewer Greg Browne and members of the Chicago Beer Society! Without their guidance, we never would have been able to build a beer selection that did justice to the great brewing nations.
Still, a great beer selection does not a great place make. But it’s a good start, beer being the great democratic beverage, the great leveler, everyman’s drink.
We read a book called The Great Good Place by Ray Oldenburg. It bemoaned the lack of “third” places in America, places where people go for social nourishment, places outside of home and work. We were inspired to make our bar a third place, to create an environment that fostered community. We aim to be a place where people from all walks of life come together, hoist a pint, and make friends.

HOURS
We are open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas!
We open at 7:30 am Monday through Friday, 8:30 am Saturday, 11 am Sundays. We sell Halfwit coffees, espressos, lattes, and all that good stuff. Enjoy them with pastries from Bennison’s Bakery. Check out the full Morning Menu.
Alcohol service begins at 11 am daily (also our opening time on Sundays).
Last call is at 1:30 am with a 2 am closing every day, but we may close earlier as business dictates. Thanks for stopping by!
FOOD
Sorry! We have no kitchen. Our only regular foodservice is available during mornings (see our Morning Menu). You are more than welcome to bring in food or order from our rough and tumble collection of delivery menus.
FULL BAR
In addition to beer, we have a full bar including liquor and fine wine.
BEER SCHOOL
We hold seasonal Beer Schools for those who like to get some education while drinking beer. The educational sessions are always led by prominent beer industry experts. Tickets go on sale at the bar three weeks before each school. They’re $25 each, 2 per person. Learn more about Beer School.
SMOKING POLICY
Hello, smokers! Please smoke on the Armitage side of the building (We are on the corner of Armitage and Hoyne; Armitage is a busy street, Hoyne is residential.) We put an outdoor ashtray there for you to use, conveniently located away from doors and windows. Thank you!
PUB CRAWLS
We are a small room, so we’re not always able to fit pub crawls. It’s best to contact Laura before your event to see whether we can work with you.
PRIVATE PARTIES OR PRIVATE BEER SCHOOLS
Please contact Laura to work out details. We’ll always try our best to accommodate you.
CREDIT CARDS
We now accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. We also have two ATMs in the bar for your convenience.
